Biography

Raúl Cañibano Ercilla´s work began to take shape in the early 1990s. It is his series “Tierra Guajira” that looks at the Cuban countryside, developed as a photographic project based on generational essays and shows the social Cuba in which the author lives. Interested in human beings as the main figure, Cañibano weaves stories around each snapshot to finally, and as part of a whole, reflect the ways of life, customs, and traditions that may or may not last over time. “Tierra Guajira” comprises of photographs made largely in the rural parts of the Island, but in parallel, Cañibano has developed other series such as “City,” “Fe por San Lazaro,” and “Sunset,” always interested in the human emotions and the day-to-day lives of Cubans.

Cañibano’s project “Sunset,” is one that comes closest to him, portraying the aging Cuban population through an intersection of the positive and negative aspects that old-age entails, something he experienced in his own family. Cañibano shoots black and white photographs to capture the stories he intends to show and be appreciated. He is always looking for the human psychology and manages to combine one series with another, where sometimes it is impossible to differentiate the contexts and others in which they are markedly united.
