What is Jíbaro Photos?

Amongst the original inhabitants of the island of Cuba, a jíbaro (pronounced as “he-baa-ro”) was the man of the mountain, the explorer who opened up new routes, and had the ability to see beyond established limits. He was a man of the forest and the wild — naturally wise, resourceful, self-sufficient, honest, stubborn, and hospitable — with “mucho orgullo.” The true jíbaro is long gone, but not forgotten, and very much defines the Cuban spirit to this day.

Jíbaro Photos is an international collective of photographers that brings together men and women who explore the world constantly, as the Caribbean jíbaros once did. The collective represents a select group of photographers who have in common to see beyond the obvious in a photographic frame. Members of Jíbaro Photos share a passion and commitment to depict the curiosity about the human condition, landscape, environment, and culture of Cuba.

Cuba has been variously known as the “Key to the New World,” the “Pearl of the Antilles,” and the “Monte Carlo of the Caribbean.” It remains the largest, most diverse, and culturally varied country in the region. Jíbaro Photos was formed with the goal of presenting a faithful portrait of this complex and mature nation while upholding the values of integrity, equality, and artistic authenticity.
