Ocaso - The Sunset

“My intent is to raise awareness about the importance of caring for the older age group.”

Demographic aging is a complex issue gaining enormous importance and interest worldwide. Over 20% of Cuba’s total population is aged over 60, making it the oldest country in the western hemisphere. By 2025, that ratio is projected to touch 30% and by 2050, Cuba is estimated to have one of the largest number of seniors in the world.

Raúl Cañibano about this project

I started my project titled “Ocaso” (Sunset) to document the lives of the elderly. Pension systems and social services are increasingly getting stressed in Cuba in the backdrop of economic hardships. My intent with “Ocaso” is to raise awareness about the importance of caring for the older age group — it comes down to us and the next generations. These images below were made between 2001 and 2020, primarily in Havana but also in some other provinces of Cuba.
