Biography

Sven Creutzmann has documented Cuba’s transition from the 20th to the 21st century like nobody else. For over 30 years, he has portrayed from a close distance and with equal intensity Cuba’s revolution leader Fidel Castro, as well as the everyday heroes of Cuba: its people — be it in a crowded bus, the tender dance of an old couple, a summersault by the sea, or the cool vibes of Cuba’s youth.

Sven was born in 1962 in East Berlin behind the Iron Curtain. He trained in commercial and editorial photography at Kleinhempel, a prestigious studio in Hamburg before starting a long career with British news agency Reuters. He has covered major national and international events for Reuters, including the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

As the only German photographer to be permanently accredited in Cuba, Sven has spent over three decades documenting the Castro Revolution in Cuba, often with privileged access to historic moments and events. Sven now works as a reportage photographer and has been published in German as well as international publications like Geo, Stern, Spiegel and The New York Times.

Sven has published four books on Cuba. His latest, ‘Havana – Im Herzen Kubas’, published by Germany’s prestigious Frederking & Thaler, is a 30-year visual journey of Havana thoughtfully presented in 322 pages. Apart from Cuba, Sven has done multiple assignments and workshops in Latin America – Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile, and Brazil.  Sven also created the ‘Café Belview’, a contemporary and trending gallery café-bar in Havana with the arts and Cuban photography as a central theme.
